Physical DescriptionA set of six sterling silver spoons (.01-.06), each with a different cutwork coat of arms representing different locations in Jamaica at the top. (.01) A leaping swordfish and waves, lettered "PORT ANTONIO" (.02) Two men holding a basket with a woman inside (.03) A woman in a dress holding a flower in each outstretched hand, in an oval lettered "OCHO RIOS" (.04) The Coat of Arms of Jamaica [A male and female member of the Taino tribe standing on either side of a shield which bears a red cross with five golden pineapples. The crest shows a Jamaican crocodile mounted on the Royal Helmet of the British Monarchy and mantling. Motto: "Out of Many, One People"]. (.05) A villa and a palm tree, lettered "NEGRIL" (.06) A sailing ship, lettered "MONTEGO BAY" (.07) The spoons are in a polished burled wood box with a separated lid, lined in dark red velvet with a velvet-covered inset to hold the spoons. Inside the lid is a silver plaque with text stating, "WITH WARM REGARDS TO NANCY REAGAN FROM MITSY SEAGA, JAMAICA, 7TH, APRIL 1982."

Historical NotePresident Reagan visited Jamaica April 7-8 1982 to meet with Prime Minister Edward Seaga and with Leaders of Eastern Caribbean Countries, while Nancy Reagan visited a local hospital. The Seagas gave President and Mrs. Reagan several gifts to commemorate their first official trip to Jamaica. Mitsy Seaga gave this set of commemorative silver spoons to Nancy Reagan.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to First Lady Nancy Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
