Historical NoteThe painting was given on the occasion of the meeting between President Ronald Reagan and Prime Minister Simmonds of Saint Kitts and Nevis in the Oval Office on December 6, 1983. They discussed the recent military intervention in Grenada. President Reagan, as he noted his visitor's country was the newest independent country in the world, asked how events were proceeding there. Prime Minister Simmonds responded by noting that there was an inevitable anxiety about the transition to independence but that, overall, people were hopeful for continued economic development. Saint Kitts and Nevis had just become fully independent on September 19, 1983, and Kennedy Simmonds was its first Prime Minister.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
