Physical DescriptionA paper mache Daruma doll. The doll's body is gold with Japanese lettering in red and white. The face of the doll has orange around the eyes and black detailing.Historical NotePapier-mâché doll called a daruma. "Nana korobi yaoki" is a Japanese proverb meaning that if you "fall down seven times, get up eight". The hollowed round shape weighted at the bottom means it will right itself when it is tipped over. The daruma is a talisman supposed to attract happiness and good fortune.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
