Physical DescriptionA silver engraved plate with a relief of the Pony Express rider. The outer edge of the plate is engraved with text stating "Pony Express St. Joseph Missouri." At the center of the plate, attached to the Pony Express image, is an engraved silver plaque stating, "To President Reagan from Mayor G. J. Wiser, April 22, 1981." The plate was made by Armetale with maker marks on the back.
Historical NoteThe first Pony Express ride began in St. Joseph, MO on April 3, 1860 and ended in Sacramento, CA, on April 14, 1860. The Pony Express, a system of relay riders rode across eight states and delivered mail between Missouri to California in an average time of only 10 days. Before the telegraph, the Pony Express was the most direct and practical means of east-west communications.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
