The text on the verso of the coin states, "Por la Esperanza de Mejor Comprensión a la Inmigración Mexicana de Indocumentados [For the Hope of a Better Understanding of Undocumented Mexican Immigration] Jorge Cardenas." (.a) With a small white leather pouch (.b).Historical NoteThe medal was given to Ambassador John Gavin by Jorge Cardenas, the mayor of Maramoros, for President Ronald Reagan when the mayor visited to the American Embassy in Mexico City, Mexico on June 24, 1983.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
