Physical DescriptionA clear glass beaver sculpture by Steuben. The beaver has red garnet eyes and is standing on its back legs with the tail behind it. It was presented to President Ronald Reagan on the occasion of the recognition of Jay Sommer as National Teacher of the Year for 1981, presented by the Regents of the State of New York.Historical NoteThe sculpture was presented to First Lady Nancy Reagan by Jay Sommer, at the a ceremony in the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden, East Wing, on April 22, 1981 naming him the 1981 National Teacher of the Year.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
