Historical NoteThis gold filigree container was a gift from Y. K. Pao, the founder and Chairman of the World Wide Shipping Group of Hong Kong, in 1982. The company began in 1955 with one second hand ship and became one of the world’s largest shipping companies. Pao later visited the White House in 1983, and President Reagan described their Oval Office meeting on July 12: “Another visitor Y.K. Pao of Hong Kong reported to be richest man in the world. He’s a nice little man—swims every morning of his life.” The Rooster is one of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac, and the year of the Rooster lasted from February 5, 1981 to January 24, 1982.
