Physical DescriptionA color photograph of President Abdou Diouf of Senegal. It is a portrait photo with his head and shoulders in front of a white curtain. Diouf is wearing a dark striped suit, a white shirt, a multicolored diagonally striped tie, and a green rosette lapel pin. There is a large white border and the photo is inscribed in French, “A son excellence le Président des Etats Unis d'Amerique, Monsieur Ronald Reagan homme d'etat [illegible] et efficace, en hommage [illegible] 10-8-1983 [signature] Abdou Diouf” [To His Excellency the President of the United States of America, Mr. Ronald Reagan statesman ___ and efficient, in tribute ___] in blue.
Historical NotePresident Abdou Diouf of Senegal gave President Reagan two photographs, one autographed and inscribed in French, at a meeting in the Oval Office during a working visit on August 10, 1983, which took place on the 100th anniversary of the American Consulate on the Senegalese island of Goree.. President Diouf said, "I should like, first of all, to thank President Ronald Reagan, to thank the American Government and the American people for the particularly warm welcome that they have extended to me and to my delegation on this my first official visit to the United States. The fact that my visit coincides, as President Reagan so appropriately recalled, with the centennial of the first American Consulate in Goree bears witness to the longstanding relations of friendship and cooperation between Senegal and the United States, two democratic nations attached to respecting human rights and basic freedoms."

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
