Physical DescriptionA wooden Kochi (.01a) represents Prince Michizane Sugawara. The sculpture, created by Yeigetsu Ishikawa and Koji Tomi-Hari, comes with a glass display case, a black lacquer stand (.01b), and a small wooden sign (.01c) with Japanese text. Historical NoteWooden doll of depicted a seated figure of Sugawara no Michizane (845-903 AD) holding blossoms, who was a scholar, poet, and courtier in Heian Japan. Michizane is considered one of Japan's greatest poets. Despite his earlier prominence, in 901 he was demoted and exiled, and after he died, a number of disasters struck Kyōto, believed to be caused by his vengeful spirit. He was posthumously promoted, a shrine built to him in Kyōto, and he became known as Tenman Tenjin, the god of scholarship. The doll was made by Yeigetsu Ishikawa and Koji Tomi-Hari and was given in advance of a visit to Japan in November 1983.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
