Physical DescriptionA sculpture of a walrus made out of Ivory and carved by Alex Akeya.Historical NoteIvory carving of a walrus by Yupik artist Alex Akeya. It was given during an Excellence in Education ceremony on the White House South Lawn May 11, 1984. The Chemawa Indian School, named for the Chemawa band of the Kalapuya people, was founded as an Indian boarding school in 1880. The oldest continuously operated boarding school for Native American students, it educates students from multiple tribes from all over the western half of the United States.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
