Physical DescriptionA "John Edgar Hoover Memorial Award" in the shape of a disc that depicts the likeness of John Edgar Hoover and a gold-tone plaque beneath the image. The plaque states, "RONALD WILSON REAGAN PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES WASHINGTON, D.C. AUGUST 1983." Stamped into the plate beneath the metal plaque is text stating "PRESENTED BY THE AMERICAN POLICE HALL OF FAME."Historical NoteThe award was presented to White House staffers in Washington, DC during American Assocatiation of Correctional Officers celebrations in May 1984. On May 5, 1984, President Reagan signed Proclamation 5187, designating National Correctional Officers Week.Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
