Physical DescriptionA rectangular brass belt buckle with the image of a space shuttle and the Kennedy Space Center building and text stating, "Kennedy Space Center." At the center of the buckle is an orange-colored stone. Engraved on the back of the belt buckle is text stating, "The stone in this buckle is made from a rock used on the crawler way at KSC."Historical NoteThe buckle was presented to Vice President George Bush when he visited the John F. Kennedy Space Center to welcome returning astronauts in September 1983. The Space Shuttle Challenger flew mission STS-8 August 30, 1983 - September 5, 1983 on the first night launch and landing of the space shuttle. STS-8 Crew included Commander Richard H. Truly, Pilot Daniel C. Brandenstein and Mission Specialists Dale A. Gardner, Guion S. Bluford, Jr. and William E. Thornton. Bluford became the first African-American to fly in space.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to First Lady Nancy Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
