Physical DescriptionA bronze medal encased in a slab of myrtle wood. The obverse depicts a city surrounded by a wall. Above the city is the word "ASSISI." The verso of the medal features the letters "STC" at the center above three hills and below two crests. The crest on the right depicts an arm in front of a cross, and the crest to the left depicts a cross and a lion side by side.Historical NoteOn February 21, 1984 President Reagan met with Italian ambassador Rinaldo Petrignani and a delegation from Assisi, Italy, including Gianfranco Sota, Mayor of Assisi, and Franciscans Fr. John Maria Polidoro, the uperior of the Basilica of St. Francis, and Fr. Michele Giura, Vicar, Basilica of St. Francis. Mayor Sota said, “Mr. President, this Franciscan delegation from Assisi comes to you because they know, Mr. President, that you are a man of peace and strong religious leanings. This is the motive which inspired their visit to you.” The medal depicts the city of Assisi, where St. Francis was born c. 1181.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
