Physical DescriptionA clear glass crystal beaver with red garnet eyes. The beaver is standing on its hind legs with its head raised to the sky. It is made by Steuben design number #8360.Historical NoteThe crystal sculptures were given by Dinner Chairman Charles Gargano and Sen. Alfonse D'Amato during the "Salute to Victory" New York Republican Party Fundraising Dinner held in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York, NY on March 6, 1984.
Gargano said as he presented the pieces, “…we would like to present to you and Mrs. Reagan individual tokens of our esteem. Mrs. Reagan, we have here the symbol of New York City, to the apple of our nation’s eye, a special friend of New York, this crystal apple. Mr. President, on January 8, 1975, the beaver was named the official animal of New York State, the beaver known for its industry, its affectionate behavior, family loyalty and community spirit… We present this for your tireless work in restoring economic vitality, national strength, and international respect, and for the same strong leadership in the upcoming election.”
However, as he was talking about the beaver being a New York state symbol, Sen. D'Amato interjected that he didn’t think anybody knew that before. He told Gargano to ask the crowd, Gargano did, and was met with laughter and shouts of “no” from the crowd.
