The Chinese phrase for "one hundred deer," sounds like the term for an official’s salary, indicating a wish for the recipient to receive political office, wealth or abundance. It was given to President Reagan through Sen. Mark Hatfield (R-OR, 1967-1997) when he visited Taiwan in 1984.
