Physical DescriptionAn Alaskan Indian grass coil basket with a lid. The basket is decorated with black birds and red squares motif.Historical NoteThe basket was given when President Ronald Reagan spoke at the University of Alaska’s Patty Athletic Center in Fairbanks, AK on May 1, 1984. He stopped in Alaska on his way back from a trip to China, and met with Pope John Paul II in Fairbanks the next day. The basket was given on behalf of the Alaska Federation of Natives after a dance performance.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to First Lady Nancy Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
