Physical DescriptionAn oval-shaped belt buckle is for the USS Ticonderoga. Inset in the center of the buckle is a medallion with text stating "USS TICONDEROGA GUARDIAN OF FREEDOM ON THE SEA IN THE SKY'' with the image of a ship. The medallion is surrounded by a floral motif.

Historical NoteThe belt buckle has a badge similar to the one of the USS Ticonderoga (CV-14), which was an Essex-class aircraft carrier comissioned during World War II and was in service from 1944-1973. It was the fourth ship to carry the name, after the Battle of Ticonderoga. The next USS Ticonderoga, CG-47, was a guided-missile cruiser. She was sponsored by First Lady Nancy Reagan, who christened her on May 16, 1981. CG-47 was in service from 1983 to 2004.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
