Physical DescriptionThis is a gold-toned commemorative coin bearing the likeness of Rutherford B. Hayes. Along the top edge of the coin, the text states “19TH PRESIDENT, U.S.A. 1877 1881” and “RUTHERFORD B. HAYES” at the bottom. The verso of the coin states, “‘He Serves His Party Best Who Serves His Country Best’ BRIGADIER GENERAL IN CIVIL WAR CONGRESSMAN GOVERNOR OF OHIO DEFEATED TILDEN FOR THE PRESIDENCY BY ONE ELECTORAL VOTE.”

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
