(.01a-b)Historical NoteThe shoes were given to President Reagan during a photo op with the winners of the New York CIty Marathon in the Rose Garden on October 27, 1982. Alberto Salazar, who had just won his third consectutive NYC Marathon, told President Reagan, "I'd like to present this model of Nike-Mariah shoes. They're the same brand which I wore in winning the New York Marathon. I'd like to present these to President Reagan, and I hope that these will help him in his race for reelection. And I'm sure that he will be reelected President." President Reagan responded, "Alberto, thank you very much. I promise not to use them in a marathon."Additional Details

It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
