Physical DescriptionFour bottles of rum were housed inside a black mahogany wood case. The first bottle of rum is a white ceramic jug with a cork stopper and text stating, "The Story of Rum Barbados is reputed to be the original home of Rum, or Rumbullion as it was originally called. Back in 1651, this account was written by a visitor: '... the Chiefe Fudling they make in the Island is Rumbullion and this is made of sugar canes distilled...strong drinks are very requisite where so much heat is, for the spirits being exhausted with much sweating. the inner parts are left cold and faint and shall need comforting and reviving.' Cokspur Fine Rum has been a favourite on the island and abround since 1884 and has been internationally acclaimed as a high quality light-bodied rum by the awarding of Gold Medals in 1976 and 1978 in London at the prestigious International Wine & Spirit Competition of the Club Oenologique. Blended & bottled in Barbados by." (.01d) The clear glass bottle on the left with a red screw top and a tan label with text stating "MOUNT GAY Refined ECLIPSE BARBADOS RUM AS MADE OVER 100 YEARS ON THE ISLAND OF BARBADOS WEST INDIES BOTTLED AND EXPORTED BY MOUNT GAY DISTILLERIES LIMITED." (.01e)The center clear glass bottle has a gold screw top lid with a tan label and text stating, "IMPORTED FROM BARBADOS FIVE STAR COCKSPUR FINE RUM BLENDED, BOTTLED AND EXPORTED BY HANSCHELL INNISS LTD BARBADOS WEST INDIES." (.01c) The clear glass jar on the right with a white screw top lid and a tan label stating "DOORLY'S Fine Old BARBADOS RUM." (.01b) The wooden case has four sections made for displaying each bottle. The hardware is made of gold-colored brass. A small brass plaque on the front of the lid states, "BARBADOS RUM SINCE 1648." (.01a) The case has a small brass key. (.01f)Historical NoteThe bottles of rum were given when President Ronald Reagan visited Bridgetown, Barbados on April 8, 1982 for a Meeting with Leaders of Eastern Caribbean Countries.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
