Physical DescriptionThis is a black lacquer box with an asymmetrical design of flowers and leaves beginning on the left side and spilling over onto the lid. The design is muted orange and light brown, outlined in gold. The lid is fully removable and made to hold stationery.Historical NoteIt was given during a state visit by Prime Minister Zenkō Suzuki of Japan and and Sachi Suzuki May 7-8, 1981. On May 7, after a formal welcome on the South Lawn of the White House, President Reagan and the Prime Minister met privately in the Oval Office and then with their delegations in the Cabinet Room. That night they attended a State Dinner in honor of Suzuki. On May 8, Nancy Reagan and Mrs. Suzuki had tea in the White House Map Room.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to First Lady Nancy Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
